The Foundational Presuppositions of NLP
Dec 06, 2022Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a powerful tool for understanding and influencing behavior. It is based on the idea that the way we think and speak affects our experience of the world. NLP is a set of techniques that helps us to identify and change our communication patterns in order to achieve desired results. At the core of NLP are 12 presuppositions which form the foundation of the practice.
The first presupposition of NLP is that we all have the resources that we need to make positive changes. This means that we don’t need to look outside ourselves for answers or solutions. Instead, we can access our own internal resources to find the answers that we need.
The second presupposition states that the map is not the territory. This means that our perception of the world is limited and subjective. We can’t fully understand the world around us and must be aware of our own biases and limitations.
The third presupposition of NLP is that every behavior has a positive intention. This means that even when we do something that may not be considered socially acceptable, there is usually an underlying positive purpose.
The fourth presupposition states that we all have the ability to choose our response. This means that we have the power to choose how we react to a given situation. We don’t have to be victims of our circumstances.
The fifth presupposition of NLP states that the meaning of a communication is the response that we get. This means that our communication should be tailored to the individual in order to ensure that it is understood and elicits the desired response.
The sixth presupposition is that we cannot not communicate. This means that even when we are not speaking, our body language and facial expressions can still communicate something to those around us.
The seventh presupposition of NLP is that we can only change ourselves. This means that we should focus on changing our own behavior in order to bring about the desired results.
The eighth presupposition of NLP is that every behavior has a structure. This means that all behaviors, from the most simple to the most complex, can be broken down into smaller components which can be examined and changed.
The ninth presupposition of NLP is that we should always seek to understand before seeking to be understood. This means that we should take the time to listen to and understand others before trying to make our point.
The tenth presupposition of NLP is that there is no failure, only feedback. This means that we should view any outcome, even one that is not desirable, as a learning experience.
The eleventh presupposition of NLP is that the only constant is change. This means that we should be prepared to adapt to changing situations in order to achieve our goals.
The twelfth and final presupposition of NLP is that we should take action. This means that we should take the necessary steps to bring about the desired change and not just talk about it.
These 12 presuppositions form the basis of Neuro Linguistic Programming and provide the framework for the techniques and strategies used to help individuals create positive and lasting change. By understanding and applying these principles, individuals can achieve better results in their personal and professional lives.
